The United States Virgin Islands is still the most popular destination for tourists in the Antilles, east of Puerto Rico. The three main islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are located about ninety miles east of San Juan, about a half hour flight. Scattered among the large islands are over 50 cays and islets, mostly uninhabited. Like most of the Caribbean, these islands were formed of uprising volcanoes from the shallow sea floor. Mostly mountainous, with the exception of areas of St. Croix, the islands are known for rugged vistas, intimate bays, characteristic white sand beaches, crystal waters and some of the most spectacular panoramas from land or sea in all of the Caribbean.
Recent years had been sluggish for the Virgin Islands, however, by virtue of the appeal of the security of the American flag, the islands are still popular and again realizing improving numbers in their economies. The island of St. John has managed to maintain as one of the highest per square foot values in the entire region.
Despite the efforts of the government to diversify, tourism remains the primary industry for the Virgin Islands, accounting for over two-thirds of gross revenue. Well over one million tourists visit each year, with nearly two thirds of those visiting St. Thomas alone. Approximately 6,000 hotel and guest house units are available to service these needs, as well as hundreds of charter boats, hundreds of retail shops and various related service industries.
The Virgin Islands offer numerous business and investment opportunities and have a sound infrastructure to accommodate most business and industrial facilities. The islands also have achieved a long-established track record for income-producing villas. Although quite developed, the Virgin Islands still boast unparalleled natural beauty and some of the best sailing waters in the world.
