The capital city of Willemstad is unmistakably Dutch. This historic town features many sights of interest to tourists, as well as being the financial center of one of the busiest money centers in the Caribbean. There are modern services and conveniences as well, including a new, man-made 6,000 foot beach, said to be the largest in the western hemisphere. The Curaçaoan countryside is arid and features small thatch huts and cottages in pastel colors. Christoffel Park is a 4,000 acre wildlife preserve, and contains the island’s highest point at 1,250 feet. Perfect waters are a joy for all types of watersports enthusiasts. Diving and snorkeling are superb, especially at Curaçao Underwater Park.
One of the world’s largest oil refineries was established on Curaçao in 1915. The island also boasts one of the largest oil terminals in the western hemisphere. Tourism is now recognized as the second largest industry. Among Curaçao’s other industries are a brewery, soap factories, paint factory, and the largest non-military dry dock in the region.
Curaçao is also known as an international finance center. The banking industry in Curaçao has, for decades, been providing off-shore companies with a variety of tax, investment and asset protection services. As with many islands Curaçao is also experiencing economic growth.
