Barbados Map Locus Google Satellite View
One of the most prosperous and developed of the Caribbean islands, Barbados maintains its very British atmosphere and tradition; polo, cricket, afternoon tea, and dressing for dinner are quite common. Its British history dates back to 1627 with Barbados only receiving independence in 1966. It is still a favorite destination and Caribbean residence to numerous British citizens. Of course, the island has been thoroughly discovered by the rest of the world; even General George Washington ventured here for health reasons before the American Revolutionary War and proclaimed it to be a “delightful place.”
The island is located at the easternmost position of the Lesser Antilles chain about 375 miles north of the coast of South America at 13”4’ N latitude, 50”37’ W longitude. Its 166 square miles feature all the tropical attributes from miles of beautiful sandy Caribbean beaches to a lush hilly interior and a dramatically rugged Atlantic coast. Most prominent hotels are situated along the favored west and south Caribbean-side coasts.
Business incentive include up to 10 years exemption from taxes on corporate profits, 2&1/2% tax rate for exports thereafter, no import duties for raw materials, unrestricted repatriation of profits, capital, and dividends.
An interesting aspect of Barbados for the small investor is the fact that since the island has had a longer developmental history and a more profound architectural history of estate homes and small hotels there are more opportunities within the B&B and Guest House market. Big money hotel operators may control the bulk of general tourism, but the alternative market of specialized small properties is on the rebound.
